While most families with two young children are working hard to keep a comfortable, manageable routine, our adventurous family has opted to pack our simple life into a 20ft shipping container and head off the beaten path together somewhere which is technically called Eurasia or better described by its’ locals as, “The Balcony of Europe” – Tbilisi, Georgia.

Making wine is simple – it happens all on its on.  To our surprise, it’s almost dummy proof as long as you have the basic venues to store and let it do its thing – make wine.  We thought, “With our patio covered in Saperavi grapes, why not give winemaking a shot?”   The worse that could happen is…vinegar, right?  Have you ever thought about making your own wine?

How to rent an apartment in Tbilisi for under 1000$

Now that you’ve decided to move to Tbilisi, Georgia, let the house hunt begin.   This is what we thought.  Ha ha…  After our first searches we thought, how are we going to afford the rent in this “developing” country.  Don’t let the high prices put you off; it’s all just a crazy price posted on their house rental ad.  Everything is negotiable, and you should negotiate towards the correct price, 30-50% less.

Other countries, other customs 2/3

In Part 1, after several hours of waiting and a few exchanged SMS messages (yes, a bit vintage here in the Republic of Georgia), Papa Fish arrived home empty handed and the barrier of what I considered “crazy” news.  (insert drum roll here) The news was: On Monday (two days later) we, as in, you and I will need to empty our 20ft container and have all our personal belongings evaluated by a custom’s “expertise”.  I simply just had to laugh and thought he is joking right.  No, he wasn’t.

Our first annual grape harvest.

A country house in Tbilisi with a patio covered by dangling white and red grape bundles and the smell of nature, how romantic does that sound?  Lets take that entire romance one step further and let’s make homemade grape juice (or wine if your feeling boozy)!

What happens when you pack your own 20ft container?

What happens when you pack your own 20ft container?

Three weeks longer than expected and exactly one month after our arrival to the place we now call home, our beloved belongings have finally arrived.  We were so excited to see our stuff and get it moved into our new house.  What we didn’t know was the 3-day long process that would follow its arrival to the “dry port” Lilo in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Day 1:  Sunny Saturday morning 10:00am
Papa fish jumped into a cab, and drove one hour out of town to where our 20ft container was waiting to be claimed at the by us.  Lilo is located near the international airport on Chimakhuli St.  The kids and myself stayed at home eagerly waiting for our stuff to arrive… NOT.
