Khinkali Making at Culinarium Cooking School

Beautifully twisted knobs of dough, stuffed with meat and spices, mushrooms, or cheese – this is what was on the menu for our Master Khinkali Making Cooking Class.  Culinarium is Located in a cozy building in the historic center of Tbilisi behind a big yellow door.  As we open the door, we were warmly welcomed by Master Chef (?) and her staff to take part in an exciting local tradition of Khinkali making.

How to rent an apartment in Tbilisi for under 1000$

Now that you’ve decided to move to Tbilisi, Georgia, let the house hunt begin.   This is what we thought.  Ha ha…  After our first searches we thought, how are we going to afford the rent in this “developing” country.  Don’t let the high prices put you off; it’s all just a crazy price posted on their house rental ad.  Everything is negotiable, and you should negotiate towards the correct price, 30-50% less.

Other countries, other customs 2/3

In Part 1, after several hours of waiting and a few exchanged SMS messages (yes, a bit vintage here in the Republic of Georgia), Papa Fish arrived home empty handed and the barrier of what I considered “crazy” news.  (insert drum roll here) The news was: On Monday (two days later) we, as in, you and I will need to empty our 20ft container and have all our personal belongings evaluated by a custom’s “expertise”.  I simply just had to laugh and thought he is joking right.  No, he wasn’t.

Our first annual grape harvest.

A country house in Tbilisi with a patio covered by dangling white and red grape bundles and the smell of nature, how romantic does that sound?  Lets take that entire romance one step further and let’s make homemade grape juice (or wine if your feeling boozy)!

What happens when you pack your own 20ft container?

What happens when you pack your own 20ft container?

Three weeks longer than expected and exactly one month after our arrival to the place we now call home, our beloved belongings have finally arrived.  We were so excited to see our stuff and get it moved into our new house.  What we didn’t know was the 3-day long process that would follow its arrival to the “dry port” Lilo in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Day 1:  Sunny Saturday morning 10:00am
Papa fish jumped into a cab, and drove one hour out of town to where our 20ft container was waiting to be claimed at the by us.  Lilo is located near the international airport on Chimakhuli St.  The kids and myself stayed at home eagerly waiting for our stuff to arrive… NOT.

Eating well – The “Local” Latte Snack bar

The “Local” Latte Snack bar

I love all these over priced chewy, nutty, fruit-filled snack bars, who doesn’t?  Especially when anything like this is not available, but should/could be.   This is where our adventure began to seek out the SOLO “nuts and dried fruit lady” in the Dezerter Bazaar (aka: fruit and veg market) in Tbilisi, Georgia.

After two metro trains and over 300 kiosk-like stalls selling everything from the moon and back… there she was, the one-stop-shop raw nut and dried fruit lady selling all the basic natural ingredients I would need to make these sweet snack bars from heaven.  I have to admit; I was surprised by the variety she offered.  I even had the opportunity to try dried fruits that I had never tried before.  Like, raspberries or 4 different varieties of plums for example.  Most of the ingredients where locally grown and dried locally, however some were imported from Iran (dates), Kazakhstan (peanuts), and neighboring Turkey (apricots).  Twenty minutes later, I was all stocked up with several half kilos of different nuts and fruits.  Prices ranged from 4 GEL (peanuts, plums, sunflower seeds) to 35 GEL (cashews, almonds, raspberries).

Out and about: Vake Park

Vake Park - Fun day

I have a love /dislike relationship with Summer. I love summer because, in my mind, I feel like I will have more time to play with my children, BBQ chicken, eat peaches, and lie in the sun by a pool or river. Ha ha… then reality sets in and I realize, wait I dislike summer. Nothing in my normal routine has changed. I still have work. I still have my homemaker responsibilities. I still have seeming no time for fun and now an added stress of two children to entertain. It’s all in the mind (and maybe a bit more organization), I promise you.

Move to Tbilisi, Georgia – The Balcony of Europe.

August 26, 2015 — by Mama fish6

While most families with two young children are working hard to keep a comfortable, manageable routine, our adventurous family has opted to pack our simple life into a 20ft shipping container and head off the beaten path together somewhere which is technically called Eurasia or better described by its’ locals as, “The Balcony of Europe” – Tbilisi, Georgia.
