Living the Dream
This statement is globally used by people every day, but what does it exactly refer to? Think about it for a moment: Living the dream.
In our experience, this term has come up in two very specific occasions. First, in 2008, we were “Living the Dream” when we quit our big company jobs to open our own businesses (CrossFit Canarias, FunctionalWOD) where we could do whatever we wanted and had complete control of the quality of lives we desired to live. Next, in 2014, we were (once again) “Living the Dream” when we decided to take the world by storm and turn our indefinite future into one big vacation with Small Fish Big World.
It is very true that in our work oriented culture, travel or vacation-time is limited to a short 2-3 weeks. Naturally, making it very difficult to experience culture and the sense of adventure when all one wants to do is relax, recover, and prepare for yet another long burst of working days. It is after those short weeks when the magic happens, the adventure captures your soul, the child in you comes alive…the dream is planted.
When we told people what we wanted to do with Small Fish Big World, two immediate concerns were expressed: expense and responsibility. Regardless of the dream, many people have the same concerns within their own ideas of what defines a “dreamy lifestyle”. Until one day, one finally decides, gathers up the courage, takes action, and hears themselves uttering these words – I am living the dream.
Small Fish Big World was founded in June 2014 nearly over night. As the Kenny Rogers song Gambler says,
“ You´ve gotta know when to hold em, you´ve gotta know when to fold em. You´ve gotta know when to walk away…”
Sometimes life gives one an opportunity to seize a moment or continue “swimming up the stream,” We decided to take that opportunity and chase a dream that has whispered her sweet stories of promise and adventure for a long time. We decided the ultimate gift we could give ourselves and our children is the wander of travel and culture – while sharing with others how to do the same.
Though we have been traveling since we were both 18 years old, one thing we know… is the more we travel, the more we want to do more. The more people we meet, the more stories we hear about new amazing places we can add onto our list of places we´d like to visit. Ultimately, the more we travel, the more we know we are LIVING OUR DREAM. It alters us and somehow becomes addicting. The planning, saving, managing, and organizing all becomes a part of the game of travel. It becomes a lifestyle. It becomes a big part of who we are.
So, this is where our DREAM begins: Our first big adventure is planned as a 6–month long trip around Georgia and Armenia – crossing the Caspian Sea – while continuing on through Central Asia. We have packed up our house into 15 boxes, stored our furniture, gave up our house, and packed two small backpacks to accompany us while on this trip.
Our intention is through Small Fish Big World we are able to provide others who have a similar dream with a platform of information based on our personal experiences.
